Ellipse primarily presents the creations of its founder, Marie-Paule Jiccio, who signs her work as MtotheP. She designs sculptures and lighting pieces with pared-down forms, sometimes anthropomorphic, archaic or playful.
Stone, unfired or fired clay, plaster, paper and brass offer different possibilities. Their properties, the gestures they call for and the unexpected turns of making contribute to her research and to the evolution of the forms she works with.
3D printing has recently joined her tools, allowing her to explore the passage from digital design to working by hand. Using filaments containing ceramic, metal or stone, this technique opens up new ways to explore materials and the transformations between these two states: what should be kept, reworked, added or taken away? Which finish should be chosen? The stages of the process are as interesting as the finished piece.
Her works regularly enter into dialogue with those of artists from very different worlds. These juxtapositions reveal resonances and contrasts, inviting a different way of looking at the pieces on display.
